The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Helen Howard can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Obituary for Helen Ruth Hill Howard

Helen Ruth Hill Howard age 86 of Florence passed away on Friday, May 05, 2017. Her visitation will be held at Elkins Funeral Home of Florence on Saturday, May 6, 2017, from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Services will be held in the Chapel of Elkins on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at 2:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens.

She is preceded in death by her; Parents: Herman A. and Sallie A. Hill. Sister: Gladys (Loyd) Hendrix. Brother: J.C.(Sue) Hill. Sister-in-law: Jackie Hill. Nephew: Jimmy Hill. And Special Great Niece: Bridgett Little

Helen is survived by her husband Thurman O. Howard of 59 years. Brother, Baker Hill. Nieces: Kimberly Hill and Barbara Sparks (M.O.) Colburn. Nephews: David (Jan) Hendrix, Jeff (Susan) Hill, Stuart Hill, Glenn Sparks. Special friends: Joanne Shaffer, Bobby and Helen Brown, Mickey and Sheila Campbell, Sarah Hester, Teresa and Tim Burns, Paul and Cheryl Newton, and Rocky Beck.

Not having children of her own, her nieces, nephews and special friends became like her children to her. They were all a very special part of her life.

Helen attended school in Lauderdale County and graduated from Central High School and Larimore Business College. She worked as a Court Reporter for Lauderdale County for 8 ½ years and as a Medical Secretary for Reynolds Metals Company at the Listerhill Plant for 31 years, retiring from there in 1988. She was a member of the National Medical Secretaries Association and a charter member of the Muscle Shoals Chapter of National Secretaries Association. She was a member of the Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ. Her hobbies include reading, cross-stitching, working with her flowers in the yard. She enjoyed surprising her family and friends occasionally with her fried apple and peach pies. But mostly she enjoyed spending time with Thurman doing whatever they chose to do together, such as: taking their antique care to car shows, fishing, traveling, antique shopping, visiting friends or just working in the yard together. Together with another couple they hosted the reunion, at their home, of the MP group Thurman served with in the Army.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations and memorials may be made to your favorite charity.
